John Henry King, Jr., 85 of Newport, RI, died Thursday, July 19, 2012 at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long courageous battle with cancer.John, the husband of Mary (Connerton) King, was born in Newport, RI on September 5, 1926, the son of the late John and Claudia (LaCerda) King. John graduated from Rogers High School in 1944 and lived in Newport his entire life. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was a firefighter for over 25 years for the Newport Fire Department until his retirement as a Lieutenant on January 3, 1976. While at the Newport Fire Department, he served for many years as the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Coordinator. He was also a sheetmetal worker for UG Nason Sons. John was an avid bowler, belonging to the Tradesman, Lions, and Island Duckpin Bowling Leagues, and an avid Boston Red Sox fan.John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years (Mary), his three children (Eileen and Peter Sandham of Portsmouth, RI, John and Patricia King of Middletown, RI, and Noreen and Robert Keas of Bullhead City, AZ), his brother (James King of Middletown, RI), five grandchildren (Michelle Keas, Bryan Keas, Sean Sandham, Megan Abbott, and Marisa King), and one great granddaughter (Brooke Abbott).The family invites all those that knew John to celebrate his life. A Calling Hour will be held on Thursday, July 26 from 9am to 10am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a prayer service at 10:30am at St. Columba's Cemetery Chapel, Brown's Lane, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Newport Rescue Wagon Fund, 21 West Marlborough St., Newport, RI 02840 or to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI 02871.
