Newport, - John J. "Jack" Gallagher, 77, of Newport, died peacefully Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at his home in Newport, RI surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of the late Manning (Donovan) Gallagher. Born in Providence, RI on November 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Patrick Gallagher and Margaret H.(OBrien) Gallagher. Jack was a graduate of De La Salle Academy and then entered the service for 4 years in the US Army. After his discharge he began a 35 year career with NUSC/NUWC as an electronics technician. He enjoyed listening to Bob Dylan and John Denver and did his "barber-shopping" at Baccari's Barber Shop on Bellevue Avenue. He and his wife Manning enjoyed travelling, as they made regular trips to Australia and Hawaii, and their final trip - a memorable cruise to Tahiti, Fiji and Bora Bora. Jack always enjoyed the company of his dear dogs Maggie and Sydney. In the eyes of his family and friends, one of Jacks greatest accomplishments was his 27 years of continuous sobriety, during which he selflessly dedicated himself to helping others and was often a speaker at local, national, and international 12-step conventions. Gallagher and Helen Marie Gallagher, and his brother Joseph Gallagher and his wife Colleen of Florida.
