Jose L. Gomes, 79, of Jepson Lane, Middletown, RI, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Newport Hospital.Born on July 28, 1936 in Cedros, Faial, Azores, he was the son of the late Francisco Lacerda and Adelina (Ventura) Gomes and stepson of the late Rose (Rodericks) Gomes.His mother passed when he was three years old and he was raised by his father, aunts and his grandmother. He worked on the family farm as a child and served in the Army in the Azores for two years. He came to the United States in 1959 during the volcanic eruptions in the Azores. Mr. Gomes first settled in East Providence, RI with his aunt and uncle, and worked in Jewelry manufacturing for several years. He later moved to Newport, RI near another aunt, an eventually married, and raised his family. For several years he worked for Moitoza's Floor Sanding and then began his own landscaping company in 1971. Mr. Gomes was a member of the Vasco de Gama Society, the Knights of Columbus and Seven Castles Club. He continued to maintain a farm at his home where he raised animals for many years. Jose also enjoyed Portuguese music and was a talented harmonica player. He was dedicated to Jesus Saviour Church and was the Mordomo of the Holy Ghost Feast in 1979.He is survived by his children, Joseph Gomes, Jr. and his wife Amy, and Dalinda Aguiar and her husband Joseph, all of Middletown; his grandchildren, Joseph F. Aguiar, Jr., Sara Alford and her husband Justin, Alexander Joseph Gomes, Nicholas Robert Gomes and Alyssa Lauren Gomes; his great-grandson, Justin Alford, Jr.; his stepbrothers, Joseph and Manuel Rodericks of Middletown; and his former wife Lena (Rodrigues) Gomes of Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 14, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.The funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 8:00 am from the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway at Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
