Joseph T. Alves

Joseph T. Alves, age 88, of Middletown died surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Heatherwood Nursing Center of Newport, RI after a battle with Alzheimer's and Cancer. Joseph was born January 2, 1924 in San Miguel, Azores. He is the son of the late Agostinho and the late Maria (Teixeira) Alves. Joseph immigrated to Newport, Rhode Island in 1968 with his wife and four children. For many years, he was the caretaker of the John Nicholas Brown Estate, now New York Yacht Club Harbor Court. He also worked at Vernon College and at Hammersmith Farms. Joseph loved gardening and fishing, and loved to share the flowers and vegetables that he grew in his backyard. His father died when he was a young boy, as one of the oldest sons in the house he learned early on to work hard and provide for his family. He was a devoted family man and proud of his family and heritage.He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise (Furna) Alves, his children Joseph Alves of Middletown, RI, Connie Caetano of Middletown, RI, Maryann Maghuyop of Middletown, RI and Louis Alves of Newport, RI; his nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; his siblings Mary Jo Teixeira, Auxilidora Machado, and Hermano T. Alves all of Canada, and Francisco T. Alves, Mariano T. Alves, and Evaristo T. Alves all of the Azores; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2012, from 4:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 4 at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI.
