Russell Wendt GMCM(U.S. Navy Retired) Middletown,RI - Russell Wendt, 96, of Middletown , died Sunday, December 28, 2014 at RI Veterans Home in Bristol, RI. Born in Chicago, ILL on Nov. 21, 1918, he was the son of the late Herman Wendt and Mollie (Lepavsky) Wendt. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Charwinsky) Wendt. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served with distinction during World War II, in the North Atlantic and the Pacific/Asian Theater. One his ships received two Presidential Citations for service during Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He is a "Plank owner "Officer Candidate School at Naval Station Newport, as being one of the original gunnery instructors. He was a small arms instructor at the Naval Gunnery Range at Sachuest Point in Middletown, R. He was also an N ROTC instructor at Penn State University. After retiring from the Navy after 26 years of active duty, Russell went to work for NUSC as a supply technician for 20 years. He is survived by his son Kenneth Wendt of Middletown, RI and his daughter Lorraine Papineau of Tiverton, RI. In addition to his children, and his 5 siblings he is also survived by eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandsons, and one great-great granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his son, Gerard C. Wendt.
