s Alpha Jean Carpenter

Alpha Jean Carpenter, age 71, of Newport died Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Newport Hospital of Newport, RI. Alpha was born January 31, 1941 in Bessemer, AL. She is the daughter of the late Zimriah and the late Gena R. (Fletcher) Brown. Alpha, an avid reader and Scrabble player was employed by Raytheon Corporation as a Technical Librarian for more than 35 years. During her retirement she attended CCRI, completing several courses towards an Associate's degree.Alpha was also a member of the NAACP, a mentor for Turning Around Ministries and known as a counselor and confidant for many women in the community.She also loved to travel and visit family and friends.Alpha is survived by her children, Barry Brown of Manchester, NH, William Brown of Newport, RI and Millicent Madrigal of Gonzales, CA. Alpha also leaves two brothers William Brown, Clarence Brown, and 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas E. Carpenter, and a sister Nancy Ruth Pritchett. Calling hours will be held on, Saturday, November 10, from 9:00-11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. The funeral will be held 11:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a burial with military honors, in Middletown Cemetery.
