Lyla C. Libby

Middletown, RI - Lyla C. Libby, 95, formerly of Hart Street, Middletown, RI, died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Village House Nursing Home, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Alfred L. Libby. Born in Newport, RI on September 30, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Nathanial L. and Rebecca (Durfee) Champlin.Lyla grew up on Forest Avenue in Middletown and later moved to Hart Street where sheand her husband raised their family. She enjoyed taking her grandchildren to the beach, searching for seaglass.Mrs. Libby was a longtime member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Middletown and a former member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. She is survived by her two sons Alan D. Libby of Newport, RI, and Gary E. Libby of Portsmouth, RI, three grandchildren, Gary Libby Jr. of Middletown, Holly Mello of Newport, and Neil Libby of Providence, and one great grandson T.J. Mello. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers Rodman, Lawrence, Ernest, and Clifford Champlin and a sister Sarah Gash. A private graveside service will be held in Middletown Cemetery.
