Marlene (Lopes) Howard Ray, 67, of Newport died Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at home with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late James Randall Ray, Jr.Born on September 14, 1947 in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late Howard Anton Lopes and Ida F. (Sutton) Lopes. Mrs. Ray attended Rogers High School. She worked at Newport Hospital, Edgehill and the Grand Islander. Mrs. Ray was a former member of the Evangelical Friends Church and a current member of CrossPointe Church, the Order of Eastern Star, Queen Esther Chapter#2 where she was the past Grand Matron, and was Past Grand Matron of Prince Hall Affiliation for the State of Rhode Island.She is survived by her daughter Carol L. Medina of Newport, RI, her sons Howard A. Ray of Newport, RI and James R. Ray III of Newport, RI, two grandchildren, Natasha L. Ray Thomas Santiago and her husband Ricardo X. Santiago, and Howard A. Ray Thomas, her great grandchildren Julious X., Nyla A., Analeigh Z. Santiago, Marlene L., Bishop H., and King H. Viera Thomas. She also leaves her brother Alfred Jackson and his wife Virginia of Newport, RI, and many nieces and nephews and cousins. She will be missed by Barbara Hicks of Lansing, MI and LaTonya Plummer of Middletown, who helped care for her during her illness.She was preceded in death by her siblings Yvonne Lopes, Carol Lopes, Lillian Stewart, Florence Gray, and Howard Mickey Jackson. Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 18 from 5:00-9:00PM, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 19 at 11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth.
