Mena G. O'Connor of Newport, RI died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Newport Hospital.Born in Cairo, Egypt, on November 17, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Herbert O. Garland and Doris Helen Webb Forshaw, both of England.She was the wife of the late Commander Desmond K. O'Connor U.S.N. with whom she was married for 43 years and lived in many places around the world.When her husband retired from the Navy and the coupled settled in Newport and in 1970, Mena opened and operated "The Linen Shop" in the Casino block on Bellevue Avenue as a specialty shop selling fine linens and accessories until she sold the business several years ago.Until recently she was an avid tennis player and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame where she played as often as she could on its beautiful grass courts.Mena is survived by nieces, Andrea Elkins of Kula, Hawaii, Sylvia Simpson and Analie Harrison, both of Austin, Texas and a nephew, Chris Mitchell of Christchurch, New Zealand and many good friends.Her funeral will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Trinity Church in Newport. Burial will be held at Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth, R.I. immediately following the funeral service.Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Robert Potter League for Animals, 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, R.I. 02842.
