Nancy Carol (Preston) Bredbeck, 75, of Newport died Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late Captain William J. Bredbeck (U.S.N., Ret.). Born on December 25, 1940 in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of the late Karl and Dorothy Randolph (Morton) Preston. Nancy was a graduate of San Marino High School and went on to receive a B.A. from Occidental College and masters degrees from U.C. Berkeley and Wayne State University. In addition to being a long-time teacher at the Newport Art Museum, Nancy was an artist in her own right. A lover of preservation, Nancy volunteered tirelessly for the Colonial Dames, for whom she served many roles, including president of the Rhode Island chapter. She was also a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Nancy was known for her generosity and hospitality, as well as for sharing her passion for art and history. She had a masterful memory and ever-present sense of humor. She adored her family, gardening, and her cottage in Canada. She is survived by her children, William J. Bredbeck Jr. and his wife Sally Skinner of Brooklyn, NY; and Katherine Bredbeck Thurst and her husband Paul of Kerhonkson, NY; her grandchildren, Eliza and William Thurst and Margaret and Beatrix Bredbeck; her sister-in-law Barbara Spates; her nephew Matthew Spates; and her niece Judy Petrongolo. Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016, from 4-7pm at Hambly Funeral Home, "Brick House", 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, RI. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at10:30am in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of Whitehall, Leukemia Lymphoma Society, or Trinity Episcopal Church.
