Natalie Vicencia (Rosa) Alexander, 95, of Newport, RI went peacefully in the arms of the Lord on Thursday, August 29, 2013. She was blessed by the gentle care given her at Village House Nursing Home, Newport, RI. Natalie, known as "Ta-Ta" in her youth, was born in Newport, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of the late Antonio Rosa and Vicencia Gomes (Pina) Rosa, both of Fogo, Cape Verde Island. She was the sister of the late Mary Rosa, Lucinda Amado, Lindo Rosa, and Nathaniel Rosa.She was married to the late Delbert Alexander and they were blessed with four loving children, Barbara Alexander of San Diego, California, Yvonne Smith of Newport, RI, Roger Alexander of Newport, RI and the late Delbert A. Alexander of Newport, RI.Natalie attended Newport Public Schools and was retired from New England Telephone and Telegraph, now Verizon. She volunteered at Newport Hospital; St. Mary's Church, and various other organizations. She was a Minister of Hospitality at St. Mary's Church, Newport and a dedicated member of the church. She was employed at Salve Regina University. She was a member of the Top of the Hill Association. She loved to travel with her girlfriends and entertain; and, more recently, she watched the Food Channel for new recipes. She was affectionately called 'Nonnie' by her family and friends. Her greatest passion was the love for her grandchildren, Earl Smith, Kevin Smith, both of Newport, RI and Jamal Smith of San Diego, CA; and her great-grandchildren; Kajsa, Taj, India and Earl. Nonnie was also a loving and supportive aunt to her nieces and nephews.Her life was filled with love and she touched many lives with happiness and joy. She will always be loved and remembered.A Mass of Christian burial will take place Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport at 9:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, RI.Visiting hours will be held in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Donations can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Research or Sickle Cell Foundation.
