Norberto S. Escobar, 81, of Middletown died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, December 15, 2015. He was the husband of Irene (Rodrigues) Escobar.Born on January 22, 1934, in Faial, the Azores, Norberto grew up in Portugal on the family farm. He served in the Army in Portugal for many years, before moving to the United States in 1959 when the Volcano erupted in Portugal. Mr. Escobar was a groundskeeper for the Aquidneck Turf Farm for many years. He loved his family, the outdoors, gardening, but his hard work will be his legacy. He loved animals and always kept them close. Mr. Escobar was a member of Jesus Saviour Church, the Holy Name Society and the Vasco da Gama Society.Besides his wife Irene of 53 years, he is survived by his daughters, MaryAnn Wilson and her husband Stan of Fall River, MA and Lucille E. Breeden of Portsmouth, his grandchildren, Michael Wilson, Brandon Wilson and Ryan Breeden, and his sisters Maria Dutra and Adelina Gonsalves, both of Portugal.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2015, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 8:00am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00, in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.
