Norman L. Barnaby, 84, of 28B Edgar Court, Newport, RI, died Sunday, May 20, 2007 at his home. He was the husband of the late Rita V. Mazzullo Barnaby.Born in Fall River, MA, on February 4, 1923, he was the son of the late John and Clara Barnaby.Mr. Barnaby grew up in Fall River, MA. He joined the US Navy at age 16. He spent 24 years in the Navy as a Gunners Mate. He worked as an instructor while stationed at Freeport Long Island Base and also completed training while in the Great Lakes. Mr. Barnaby served in World War II, Korea, and two tours in Vietnam completing a circumnavigation of the world. He was a former member of the Fleet Reserve Association and has been a friend of Bill W for 26 years. Mr. Barnaby volunteered as Santa Claus for the Martin Luther King Center in Newport for many years, often making many of the toys himself. He was also seen walking all over Newport, or swimming at the Newport YMCA. One of his favorite activities was a Sunday shopping trip with his family to Walmart, followed by lunch at the Pub 99.He is survived by two daughters, Susan Wilkinson and her husband, Richard, of Newport, RI, Linda Barnaby of Newport, RI, a godson, John Barnaby of Fall River, MA, two brothers, Eli Barnaby of Fall River, MA, and Roger Barnaby of Cincinnati, OH, three sisters, Irene Levesque of Fall River, MA, Lorraine Theroux of Taunton, MA and Yvette Gagnon of Westport, MA, and two grandchildren, Alexander and Stephen Wilkinson. His funeral will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at 11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2007, from 5-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.
