Norris Dresser Hoyt, of 9 1/2 Malbone Road, Newport, died Monday, May 24, 2004 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. He celebrated his 90th birthday with friends on March 19.He was the husband of Katherine Foster Naething Hoyt.Born in New York City, NY on March 19, 1914, he was the son of the late William Brewster and Ida Dresser Hoyt.Captain of the Yale swimming team in 1936, he was part of a legendary 14 year winning streak. He taught at Milton Academy for a year, then returned to Yale for a PhD in English and taught at Clark University for 4 years. He served in the Navy in PTs in the Pacific during WWII. He came to Newport to teach at St. George?s School in 1946 and stayed for 29 years. He was the head of the English Dept, coached swimming and crew and started the sailing program. He also spent every summer on boats. He sailed in 23 transatlantic races, Bermuda races, Fastnets, and even a Cape Town to Rio. And in between, he and Jerry Nevins broadcast the America?s Cup races on WADK to the yachting world. In 1975, he and Kitty retired to sail the Bahamas and Caribbean. He sold the final boat at the age of 85. He was a gifted raconteur, as every yacht club and power squadron on the east coast can attest, and his photography was legendary. He became a regular contributor to Sail Magazine, and was an associate editor until shortly before his death. He and Kitty were married for 65 years. He is also survived by his son William Brewster Hoyt II of Hartland, VT, his two daughters Katherine Hoyt Psaki and Jane Hoyt DelRoss both of Newport, RI, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Wilfred Dresser Hoyt.A Memorial Service will be held on June 6, 2004 at 2:00pm in St. Georges School Chapel, Purgatory Road, Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Georges School, Norris D. Hoyt Pool Building Fund, Purgatory Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
