Palmira Pal Elinor Spencer of Newport, RI passed away on December 30, 2010 in her 93rd year. She was the wife of the late Stanley Spencer Sr. Born in Warren, RI on March 23, 1918, she was the daughter of Ernest P. Mello and Maria Affonso Mello. She grew up with her adoptive parents Manual Farias and Julia Avila Farias in Swansea, MA. She lived for several years on Marthas Vineyard where she met her husband Stanley. They married and moved to Pawtucket, RI in 1940 where Stanley enlisted in the Navy. Following Stanleys discharge in 1945, they moved to Newport where they raised their family. She was a communicant of St. Josephs Church. Pal loved to reminisce with her children and grand children about her life as a child and her years on Marthas Vineyard. She enjoyed her many collections of books and was always up to date on new ones. Pal also had a great fondness for cats, and always had a cat around the house. She was also a wonderful cook and in past years had done cake decorating for special events. Pals passing is a great loss to the family. Pal leaves behind four sons, Melvyn of Newport who was her care giver, Stanley Jr. and wife Dolores of Portsmouth, Russell and wife Debra of Portsmouth, and Milton and wife Susan of Myrtle Beach, SC. She also leaves behind grand children Diana Lastra, Johna Spencer, Elaine Squatrito, Susan Mitchell, Jeanne Spencer, Chad Spencer, Kerri Hollis, Lindsay Spencer, Michael Spencer, and Michelle Spencer, fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late DOlinda Melo Prada of Edgartown, MA, the late John Melo of Acushnet, MA, and the late Genevieve Melo Prada of Edgartown, MA.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 5th at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home at 375 Broadway, Newport, RI followed by a funeral mass at St Josephs Church at 9:00 AM on Broadway. Burial will be at St Columba Cemetery in Middletown, RI. Calling hours at Memorial Funeral Home will be Tuesday, January 4th from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
