Panagiota 'Toula' Georgiou

Panagiota "Toula" (Mathinos) Georgiou, 76, of Middletown died Thursday, December 27, 2012 at home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of James Georgiou.Born on August 14, 1936 in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late George and Calliope (Drogos) Mathinos. Mrs. Georgiou grew up on the Point in Newport and was a graduate of Rogers High School. Toula attended to many responsibilities in the family businesses, including the former Ocean View Restaurant and their construction company, as well as several real estate investments. Toula was a talented ceramic artist, loved time at the beach and near the ocean with her family, and especially enjoyed her annual trips to their oceanfront summer house on the island of Skiathos. Toula enjoyed her extensive collection of cookbooks, loved gardening and flowers, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Besides her husband of 54 years, she is survived by her children, George Georgiou of Newport, and Alexandra Philippides and her husband Alexander of Greece, her grandchildren, Katrine, John, and Demetri "Jimmy" Philippides all of Greece, as well as her dear cousins, Ionna Bairos-Moreau, Athanasia Lenaghan and Juanita French.She was the sister of the late George "Blinky" Mathinos. Calling hours will be held on, Sunday, December 30, 2012, from 4:00-7:00pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Her funeral will be held on Monday, December 31, 2012, at 10:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, with her service at 11:00AM in St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, Thames and Brewer Street, Newport, RI.
