Paul K. Gianiotis, 66, of Newport R.I. passed away unexpectedly at home on September 1, 2013. He was the son of the late Kostas P. and Julia Gianiotis,born on December 23, 1946.He was a graduate of Roger High School Class of 1965 and Providence CollegeClass of 1969. Paul's career as an elementary and middle school teacher, with Newport Public Schools, began in 1969. He finally retired in 1998 after 29 years as an Educator. During that time he also served as an athletic coach for several sports: Girls' Basketball, Boys' Football, and Girls' Softball all at Sullivan School and Girls' Basketball at Thompson Jr. High School. He was also very active in the Newport Teachers Association. An avid Providence College Basketball fan, he was sure to attend games during the year with friends and former PC alumni. For many years he also enjoyed and excelled in salt water fishing. Paul loved living in Newport with everything it had to offer.He is survived by Anna Gianiotis Luna, his sister, and her husband Bob Luna of Los Angeles, CA, Michael Koutrakos, his uncle, of Fitchburg, MA, Helen Kellis, his Godmother, of Broomall, PA, many cousins, Godchildren, and a core group of loyal friends.Funeral services will be held on September 13, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in St. SpyridonsGreek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport, R.I. Burial will be held at Middletown Cemetery on Wyatt Road in Middletown.Calling hours on September 12, 2013, from 4:00 -7:00 P.M. at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, R.I. will also include a special service conducted by Reverend Dr. George Economou at 4:30 P.M. at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be sent to St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 427, Newport, RI 02840.
