Paul S. McBride, 89, entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Lorraine V. (Ferreira) McBride. They had been happily married for 57 years. He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife, Lorraine, their two sons, Paul S. McBride II and his wife, Susan, from Dunkirk, MD and Norman J. McBride and his wife, Deborah from North Chelmsford, MA, and a daughter, Deborah Hopkins and her husband, Frank from Charlestown, RI and seven grandchildren: Aimee Sarah McBride, Sean and Marissa Hopkins, Briana Hopkins Casey and Alyssa and Julia McBride. Paul was born in Covington, TN the fourth of fifteen children to the late Melvin E. McBride and Virgie Lee (Goode) McBride. He is predeceased by his brothers, Melvin, Walter, James, David and Knoble; and sisters, Leslie McBride, Dorothy Max, Hazel McCoy, Ruby Kuykendall, Willy Powell and Evelyn Klein. He is survived by his sisters, Charlotte Richardson of Arlington, TX, Gail Chumley and Shirley Max of Covington, TN. Mr. McBride was a 1943 graduate of Byars Hall High School in Covington, TN. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theater from June 28, 1943 to February 12, 1946. He attended Radar Operator School at Point Loma, CA, and was honorably discharged with the rate of radarman Second Class. Mr. McBride graduate from Shelby County School of Aeronautics in White Haven, TN, in 1947 as a Radio Technician and from United Television Laboratories in Louisville, KY, in 1948 as a television technician, after which he accepted a position with Philco Corporation in Philadelphia, PA, as an Electronic Field Service Representative. In 1951, he transferred to Newport Naval Base as a Philco Field Engineer Team Leader where he worked in Navy electronics until his retirement on June 30, 1973. Mr. McBride was Portsmouths elected Tax Collector from 1970 to 1973. On July 1, 1973, he became the Town of Portsmouths first Finance Director. He was a past president of the Rhode Island Tax Officials Association, a past President of the Rhode Island Government Finance Officers Association and Past Treasurer of the New England States Government Finance Officers Association. Upon his retirement in 1989 it was announced that a street located in the Kings Grand subdivision in Portsmouth was being named McBride Drive in Pauls honor. Mr. McBride was charter member and past President of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and a recipient of Rotary Internationals Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He was a charter member of Green Valley Country Club and active member of Green Valley Golf Association, having served several terms as Association President. Paul was also a member of the Portsmouth Senior Center.Paul was a bright and kind man...known by all as a Southern gentleman. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed his weekend golf group wand was fortunate to experience 3 hole-in-ones! He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014, from 4:00-8:00pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. His funeral will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014, at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
