Peter John Boiani Newport, RI - Peter John Boiani, 69, of 108 Eustis Avenue Newport, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Gertrude ?Trudy? Elizabeth Murphy Boiani. Born in Newport, RI on January 14, 1935, he was the son of Tito Boiani and Elizabeth Caveroni Boiani. Mr. Boiani graduated from Rogers HS in 1952, and became a commissioned officer in the US Army in 1956 from URI. During his army training he completed Army Language School and parachute training. He later received a MBA from the University of Richmond and completed the US Air War College. During his 27 years in the Army he served in the 25th Infantry in Hawaii, the 4th Infantry in Washington, the 2nd Vietnam Corps and the 1st Infantry in Vietnam, the Military Assistance Group in Laos and Thailand, and the 7th Army Division in Heidelburg and 2nd Support Command in Nuremburg, both in Germany. For his service he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Army Legion of Merit with Cluster, Bronze Star with 5 Clusters, Air Medal with Cluster, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Thailand Parachutist Badge. He retired from active Army service in 1983 and continued work as the Senior Army Instructor for the JROTC program at Rogers High School until 1993. In his civilian life he was a member of the Newport Lions Club and served as its president during the 1994-1995 year. He was a member of the Newport Zoning Board of Review, Parking and Traffic Commission, Beach Commission, and Cultural commission. Col. Boiani also served as the Coordinator of the Newport Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force from 1995-2002. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Peter John Boiani of Middletown, RI, two daughters Lisa Anne Shull of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Christine Mary of West Warwick, RI, three brothers Norman Boiani of Southboro, MA, Richard Boiani of Newport, RI, and James Boiani of Geneseal, NY, 7 Grandchildren: Christopher, Kate and David Shull, Peter Jon, Sofia, and Michaela Boiani, and Griffin Gilchrist.His funeral will be held Saturday, August 14, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington at a later date.
