Newport, RI - Philip B. Gomes, Jr., 78, of 71 Callendar Avenue, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the former husband of Bernadine Jackson Lacey of Graysonville, MD and Stella Cote Gomes of Newport, RI. Born in Newport, RI, on December 17, 1927, he was the son of the late Philip and Anna Lopes Gomes.Mr. Gomes served in the United States Army Air Corp, during World War II and in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a communicant of St. Jospehs Church. He was a past president and member of the Cape Verdean Association of Newport and a former member of the Cape Verdean Veterans Association of New Bedford, MA. Mr. Gomes enjoyed salt water fishing and working in home gardens. Besides his former wives, he is survived by his son Armando Gomes and his wife Dorothy Gray Gomes of Germantown, MD, his brothers George L. Gomes of Oakland, CA, Donald J. Gomes of Harrisburg, PA, Richard M. Gomes of Providence, RI, John N. Lima and Robert J. Lima both of Newport, RI, his sisters Joan Sanders of Newport, RI, Mary J. Threadgill of Richmond, VA, and Diane Thomas of Brandywine, MD, and his good griend Amos Lopes of Newport, RI. He was the brother of the late Dolores E. Early. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at 8:00a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Libre Service at 9:00a.m. in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 14, 2006, from 4-8p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home.
