Phillippa E. Moreino Almeida, 86, of 309 Spring Street, Newport, RI, formerly of 27 Chapel Street, died Thursday, July 10, 2008 at St. Clare Home, Newport, RI.Born in Newport, RI on August 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Simplicio Lopes and Joanna Brito Moreino.Born and raised in Newport on Kingston Avenue, as a young woman she did some domestic work. She took a position as Deputy Director of New Visions. Mrs. Almeida earned a degree from Rutgers University and worked as an alcohol counselor and moved on professionally to Edgehill Newport. She was very active in Newport as a community advocate, a member of the N.H.A. Residents Council, a founding member of the Church Community Housing Corporation, she also helped with the Fair Welfare and several legal support services in the community. She longed to see more of the country and explore the American South, so she moved to Washington DC for several years, as later to Baltimore. But soon she missed her beloved Newport and returned. Mrs. Almeida at the age of 70 became a Certified CNA, helping the elderly as a senior companion. She had a flair for dressing up; was an excellent seamstress, she could knit and crochet and probably made hundreds of caps and booties for the newborns at the Newport Hospital. She also enjoyed gardening and and a good game of cards. She was a caring person, and was the first to help her family and friends when someone was ill. She is survived by her daughter Marjorie Williams and her husband Douglas of Boston, MA, her sisters Josephine Silva of Jamaica, NY and Eugenia Williams of Newport, RI, her granddaughter Yvonne Mendes of New Bedford, MA, two great grandsons, one great granddaughter. She is also survived by her god-daughter Joanna Sommerville of Newport, RI, her devoted niece Alicia Williams of Newport and a host of loving nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Raymond Anthony Almeida, sister of the late Joseph P. Moreino, Gregory Moreino, Timothy Moreino and Mary Grace Golden. Her funeral will be held on Monday, July 14, 2008, at 9:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Monday morning of from 9:00 to 9:30 am in the funeral home.Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.
