Phyllis L. Bowley

Middletown, RI - Phyllis Lorraine Clarke Bowley, 87, of 600 Valley Road, Middletown, RI, died peacefully at the nursing center on Thursday, August 27, 2009 with her family at her side. Born in Newport, RI on October 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Oswald and Genevieve Murphy Clarke.Phyllis worked at the Torpedo Station in Newport during World War II. She also worked for the City of Newport for the Police Records Department and the Public Works Department. Phyllis liked to cook, play bocce and bowl duckpins. She also enjoyed playing cards, doing the Jumble word puzzle, collecting lighthouses and she enjoyed her time with her three sons, her siblings, and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sons Michael Bowley of Newport, RI, Stephen Bowley and his partner Tom Riedel of Denver, CO and John Bowley, Jr. and his wife Lori Blackburn Bowley of Newport, RI, and her sister L. Jean Smith of Middletown, RI. Phyllis was the sister of the late Genevieve Klapthor Copsey, Beatrice Echola, Kenneth Clarke, Thomas Clarke Sr., Waldorf Clarke, Russell The Candyman Clarke, Charles Clarke, and Florence Clarke. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at 12:00pm, in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport.Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 31, 2009, from 5:00-8:00pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home.
