Middletown, RI - Dr. Quinton S. Ivy, 83, of Middletown, RI, and Spauldings West Shore in Colchester, Vermont, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010 surrounded by his family.Quinton was a former pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church, Middletown, RI and St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Newport, RI. Born in Hamlin, Texas on September 2, 1926, he was the son of the late William T. and Mary Hester Taylor Ivy and a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan.Quinton graduated from Baylor University, Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY and received his doctorate from Boston University. In his 50+ years in the ministry he served 11 churches in many states, with his longest tenure being at the College Avenue Church in Somerville, MA, the Community United Methodist Church in Wayland, MA and Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown, RI. Throughout his career he was active and involved in many community organizations promoting social justice and offering emergency services. He served such roles as interim District Superintendent of the RISEM District of the United Methodist Church, President of the RI Council of Churches, President of Stop-Over-Services of Newport County, and Director of the National Workshop for Christian Unity when it met in Providence. He was also an active member of the Aquidneck Island Clergy Association, and active in the Rhode Island Antigambling Coalition. Quinton was kind, charismatic and loving. He was always ready to respond to emergencies and offer support and help of whatever kind, at whatever time of day or night. He was a talented preacher with a soothing southern drawl and a wonder sense of humor. Quinton often joked that he was likely the only minister with a full-size pin up of Marilyn Monroe on the back of his office door. He considered members of his church community to be his extended family, and will be very missed by all who loved him. Quinton had a special connection and love for children and was more than overjoyed when he became a father and a grandfather. His grandchildren were the loves of his life. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth N. Ivy, Libby, his daughters, Laryn Gardner and her husband Alan of Weston, MA and Robyn Ivy and her husband, Matt Wild of Wakefield, RI. He was the beloved Poppop of Rook and Cole Wild and Anna, Ben and Cecily Gardner. The youngest of eight children, he is also survived by Gerald Ivy, Mary Frances and DeWayne Needham, Marvin Jeffcoat, Charles B. and Barbara Nye and Corinne Nye, plus many loved nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife Joanna Floyd Ivy, his brothers, W.T. Ivy and Doyle Ivy, sisters, Evelyn Jeffcoat, Gladys Burton and Opal Shirley and brother-in-law Fred Nye. A celebration of Quintons life will be held at 3PM, Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Calvary Untied Methodist Church in Middletown, RI, with calling hours at Calvary Church Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 4pm-7:30pm, with a memorial burial service at a later date in Burlington, Vermont.
