Raymond Leroy MacFarlane, 78, of Newport, RI died on Monday, March 30, 2015 at home. He was the husband of Patricia C. (Knoob) MacFarlane.Born on July 31, 1936 in San Diego, CA he was the son of the late Robert and Mabel (Guile) MacFarlane. Following in his father's steps as a Chief Storekeeper, Mr. MacFarlane served 22 years in the US Navy during the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring in 1976 as Chief Petty Officer where he spent most of his career in the submarine services. He was a longtime volunteer at the Martin Luther King Center refurbishing donated computers for use by those in need. Ray enjoyed cooking and baking, hunting, and was an avid football fan. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ray was a 1978 graduate of Roger Williams University with a degree in business. He was a member of the American Legion, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Aquidneck Island Military Rod Gun Club, a member and current Vice-President of the Newport County Rod Gun Association, a life member of the National Rifle Association, and the Aquidneck Island PC Users Group. In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his children, Judy Bennett and her husband William III of Newport, RI, Kim Renner and her husband Brian of Ohio, Bonnie Sullivan of Newport, RI, and John MacFarlane and his wife Pamela of Middletown, RI; his siblings, Robert MacFarlane of New Jersey, James MacFarlane of Nebraska and Ruth McKinney of Connecticut, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 6, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 9:30 AM in Evangelical Friends Church, 70 Bliss Mine Road, Middletown, RI.Burial with Military Honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI at 1:00 PM.Memorial donations may be made to the Autism Society of Northwest Ohio, 6629 West Central Avenue, Suite 1, Toledo, OH 43617 or a charity of one's choice.
