Raymond M. Gilchrest

Raymond M. Gilchrest, 65, of New Britain, CT, died Monday, October 22, 2012 at West Haven VA Hospital in Connecticut. Born April 24, 1947, in Newport, RI, he was the son of Ray Gilchrest of Middletown, RI and the late Aileen H. (Daley) Gilchrest.Raymond grew up in Middletown the oldest son of 12 children, and spent many days working with his father and brothers on their family property. After high school, he joined the US Army and served during the Vietnam War, primarily as a driver of personnel carriers. After his service, he used the GI Bill to further his education, and received advanced training in plumbing, refrigeration, and boiler maintenance. For the last several years, Raymond worked for the VA Hospital in West Haven, CT and the Newington, CT VA Hospital. In his free time, Raymond enjoyed fishing.Besides his father, he is survived by his daughter Margaret Mary Brum of South Dennis, MA, his sons Raymond M. Gilchrest Jr. of South Dennis, MA, Paul E. Gilchrest of Hyannis, MA, and Damon D. Gilchrest of Sandwich, MA, his five sisters: Kathleen Bannan, Ellen Morris, Linda Stanley, Marilyn Gilchrest, and Dianna Williams and six brothers: Robert Gilchrest, Francis Gilchrest, David Gilchrest, Thomas Gilchrest, Christopher Gilchrest, and Michael Gilchrest, his former wife, Patricia Gilchrest Gaudet of South Dennis, MA, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, and a wife Mary Louise (Murphy) Gilchrest.Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012, from 10:00-11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 am in the funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in Middletown Cemetery, Middletown.
