MIDDLETOWN, RI ? The Rev. Roy MacKaye Atwood, 82, formerly of Blenheim Newport, Middletown, RI and Enfield, CT, died November 11, 2003 at the John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown. He was the husband of the late A. Phyllis Gregg Atwood. They had been married for 43 years.Born in Newport, RI, on September 21, 1921, he was a son of the late Col. Roy S. Atwood and the late Mary MacKaye Atwood.Father Atwood was Rector Emeritus of St. Andrew?s Episcopal Church, Enfield, CT, where he spent most of his active ministry. He helped organize the local bus transportation for the elderly, and was responsible for establishing the ?Loaves and Fishes Kitchen? at the parish.In the Diocese of Connecticut he was a member of the Department of Youth Work, chaplain of the Diocesan Assembly of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, A member of the Department of Finance, and of the Cathedral Chapter.He was founder and president of the Enfield Ministerial Association and of the Council of Churches. He was chaplain of the Connecticut Assembly of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, president of the Pioneer Valley Branch of the English Speaking Union. Following his retirement he moved to Wetheresfield, CT where he did supply work in various Connecticut parishes and at St. John the Evangelist Church in Newport.Father Atwood was a member of the Alden Kindred, a descendant of Benjamin and Abigail Ellery, early residents of Newport and Grandparents of the signer William Ellery, of Senator Asher Robbins, Col. George Irish of the Rhode Island Militia. His great grandfather, Col. James Morrison MacKaye, was a sometime resident of Newport and a member of President Lincoln?s Freedman?s Inquiry Commission.He served as chaplain of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the Revolution. He was a shareholder of the Redwood Library Newport, a member of the Preservation Society of Newport and the Alliance Francaise de Newport.He was a graduate of Tufts College where he was a member of Delta Upsilon, and of the Virginia Theological Seminary.He leaves two daughters, Kathryn Morrow of North Kingstown, RI and Mary Lamo of Carmichael, CA; five grandchildren, Glenn and Keith Morrow and Adrian, Julian and Andrea Lamo. He was also the brother of the late Bradford Atwood and Mary Sharp.A Requiem Mass will be offered on Saturday, November 15, at 11:00am in St. John the Evangelist Church, Washington Street, Newport, with interment following at St. Mary Churchyard, Portsmouth.
