Newport, - Rev. Thomas J. Carnevale, 89, of Broadway Newport, died Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. Born in Providence, RI on October 22, 1913, he was the son of the late Felice and Maria Antonia Lepore Carnevale.Rev. Carnevale joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 in 1930 and served for 23 years, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer. After the Navy he began his studies for the priesthood at the St. Philip Neri Seminary in Boston, MA, then to St. Marys Seminary in Baltimore, MD and Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, RI. Rev. Carnevale was ordained by Bishop Russel J. McVinney on May 27, 1961. His first assignment was at the Cathedral of SS Peter Paul in Providence then to St. Domenic Savio Retreat Center. Rev. Carnevale was the Associate Pastor at St. Lucys Church in Middletown. After his retirement he served at many parishes around Aquidneck Island saying masses and filling in for other pastors. Rev. Carnevale belonged to the Newport Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Vasco da Gama Society, and was involved in the Church Community Housing Corporation in Newport. He was always active with the St. Joseph?s Soup kitchen. Father Tom was an avid golfer playing often at Green Valley CC and Wanumetonomy GCC.He is survived by five sisters Rose M. Palombo Hinckley of Jamestown, RI, Josephine A. Sullivan of Providence, RI, Theresa M. Albanese of North Providence, RI, Phyllis A. Pilkington of Providence, RI, Evelyn Cafferty of Providence, RI, numerous nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and great nephews.He was the brother of the late Victoria M. Castricone Rocchio and Mary C. Bibeault. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at 10:00AM in St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence.Burial will be in St. Annes Cemetery in Cranston.Donations in his memory may be made to St. Joseph?s Church St. Vincent De Paul Society, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport, RI 02840 or to the Church of the Assumption 791 Potters Ave Providence, RI 02907.
