MIDDLETOWN, RI - Rhoda May Smith McSparren, 85, of Newport, died Saturday, April 16, 2005 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Charles Thomas McSparren Born in Bridgeport, CT on January 22, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Edith Sharp Smith.Mrs. McSparren was a homemaker. She was a former member of Newport Naval Mothers Club, the Newport County Rail Road Foundation, the Point Association of Newport, the American Legion Auxilary #7, the Auxilary to Rhode Island Veterans Home, the Edward King House, the Park Holm Seniors, and the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation. and the Kolah Grotto Bowling League. Rhoda was past president, secretary and treasurer of the Capt. Gilbert Auxillary VFW, Treasurer and Chaplain of the Newport American Legion Auxilary, past president of the Salvation Army Home League, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Kolah Grotto Bowling League. She is survived by her son Charles T. McSparren Jr. of Airway Heights, WA, her brother Samuel H. Smith of Stratford, CT, her sisters Elsie Manicucci of Shelton, CT, Charlotte Kalakay of Stratford, CT, Edith King of Newport, NH, and Louisa Gaudette of Stratford, CT, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the sister of the late Bertha Mirto. Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2005, at 10:00AM in the Evangelical Friends Church, 70 Bliss Mine Road, Middletown, RI.
