Richard A. Hines, 79, of Village Road, Tiverton, died September 30, 2010 at home. He was the husband of Dawn Powell Hines for fifty-seven years. The couple was married in Watertown, NY on November 28, 1953. He was born November 27, 1930 in Brighton, MA the son of the late Martin A. Hines and Mabel G. Hines.Mr. Hines retired in 1997 from Welcon, Inc, Providence where he was Vice President of Operations. Prior to that he was Vice President and General Manager of the Skinner Valve Division, Honeywell Inc, in New Britain CT. Earlier, he served in a variety of financial positions with Leesona Corporation of Warwick, RI, the former Skinner Chuck Co, New Britain, and with the firm of Hadfield, Rothwell, Soule and Coates, CPAs, Hartford, CT.A 1952 graduate of the University of Connecticut, he was commissioned in the US Army serving on active duty during the Korean War. He remained active in the Connecticut Army National Guard and the US Army Reserve, retiring in 1978 as Lieutenant Colonel.He was active in the Republican Party in Rhode Island, serving on the Jamestown Republican Town Committee for many years, for two years as its chairman, and on the Republican State Central Committee. He also served two terms on the Jamestown Town Council, 1993-1997. He was a member of the East Greenwich Development Commission, serving as its chairman in 1977-1978.He was a member of the Harford Chapter, National Association of Accountants, serving as its President in 1968; the National Fluid Power Association, the Fluid Control Institute and the Reserve Officers Association.He was a Director of the New Britain General Hospital and the New Britain YMCA and a trustee of the New Britain YWCA. He was active with the New Britain/Berlin United Way for many years, and was a Director and President of the New Britain Chamber of Commerce.After his retirement, Mr. Hines continued as a Director of the former Business and Industry Risk Management Association and the Employers Managed Health Association, both of Providence.Besides his wife, he leaves his son David C. Hines, of Navarre, FL and his wife Stephanie; his daughter Tracey Hines Verrier of Fernandina Beach, FL; his son in law David W. Verrier, and two grandsons, Matthew and Luke Verrier of Jamestown, RI. He is also survived by his brother Peter S. Hines and family of Mystic, CT and his sister Sandra A. Hines of New York City.His funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 11:00am with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mark Church, Narragansett Ave, Jamestown, RI. Burial with military honors will follow in Cedar Cemetery in Jamestown.
