Newport, RI - Richard A. King, 50, of 137 Bliss Road Newport, died Sunday, February 13, 2005 at home.Born in Newport, RI on February 24, 1954, he was the son of the late Frederick F.W. and Anne Bean King. Mr. King was a Program Analyst at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division in Newport for 28 years. He was awarded numerous employment related performance awards, most notably The Department of Defense Outstanding Employee with a Disability for the year 1995. At this time he was also honored with a Gubernatorial proclamation proclaiming October 19, 1995 as Richard King Day in the State of Rhode Island, and was awarded the Newport Medal of Honor in recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions to society. Richard had been a member of People Activley Reaching Independence PARI and received the PARI Independent Living Award in 1990 for extraordinary progress in achieving personal independent living goals. Additionally he contributed to the Americans with Disabilites Act and the Newport Public School Department Advisory Committee on developing solutions to problems in disabled accessibility. Mr. King was a graduate of Roger Williams University, class of 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He is survived by his brother Frederick F. W. King Jr. of Newport, RI, two sisters Janice de Vries of Hague, Netherlands, and Barbara McIntosh of Providence, RI.His funeral will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2005, at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
