Richard Michael Sousa

Tiverton, RI - Richard M. Sousa, 60, of Tiverton, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, MA. Born in Fall River, MA, on April 8, 1953, he was the son of the late Antone Sousa and Josephine (Grasse) Sousa. He was the husband of Suzanne S. (Roche) Sousa. Rick received a Bachelor's Degree in Art from Rhode Island College. He was a very skilled woodwooker, using his craft to build furniture, pieces of art, boats, and even houses. He was particularly gifted at woodturning, teaching his skill at workshops and at the Tiverton Middle School. Some of his works were published in Fine Home Building and Rhode Island Monthly magazines; others are on display at the Boston Museum of Science. He was a member of the Ocean State Woodturners and enjoyed attending the Westport Fair every year with his wife. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Lucas R. Sousa of Washington, DC, his daughter Jessica A. Sousa of Bedford Hills, NY, two brothers, Anthony Sousa and his wife Beverly of Barrington, RI, and Thomas Sousa and his wife Marilyn of Fall River, MA, his sister Rita Honnen of Middletown, RI, and several nieces and nephews.His funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 9:00a.m., from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, East Main Road, Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, from 4-7p.m. in the funeral home.
