Portsmouth, RI - Richard T. Butch Costa, 70, of Portsmouth, RI, died Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Newport Hospital Born in Fall River, MA on July 10, 1941 he was the son of the late M. Thomas and Rita Cosgrove Costa. Butch, a nickname since childhood, was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. He graduated from De La Salle Academy in Newport and Roger Williams College. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. He spent over 20 years at Raytheon, but his real passion was golf. He was a member of Green Valley Country Club and spent many days helping at tournaments. He was also a member and longtime Treasurer of the Portuguese American Club in Portsmouth and served as Grand Marshall in their parade. Richard was an avid Yankees fan and a member of the Seaconet Sportsmans Club and the Portsmouth Knights of Columbus. He loved dogs and enjoyed taking his sisters dogs out for a walk, often not returning them to her for several days. He was a kind and generous man who always reached out to help his family and friends. He is survived by his children, Robert Costa of Ocala, FL and Richard T. Costa Jr, of Manchester, NH, his siblings, William T. Costa and his wife Barbara of Ellington, CT, Frances Healy of Portsmouth, RI his nieces Dawn Kozakiewicz of Warren, RI, and Lisa Gorton of Fall River, MA, as well as many more nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sisters Joan Mersey and Roberta Nine. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 30 from 2:00-5:00pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.His funeral will be held on Monday, October 31 at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Anthonys Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Anthonys Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or the Special Olympics, 370 George Washington Hwy#1, Smithfield, RI 02917.
