Robert Dalphin Soares

PORTSMOUTH, RI ? Robert ?Bob? D. Soares, 77, of Portsmouth, RI, died Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at home. He was the husband of Julia June Soares. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on January 7, 1929, he was the son of the late Frank and Maria Dalphin Soares.Mr.Soares was a 1947 graduate of BMC Durfee High School. He dutifully served the United States Navy during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Lake Champlain CVA-39, in the Air Squardron Sixty-Two VC-62 and in Jacksonville, Florida at U.S. NAS before being honorably discharged in 1955. Mr. Soares then worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1988. Prior to his retirement, he served as the Portsmouth Postmaster and Little Compton Postmaster. In his retirement he enjoyed working at Allen?s Wine and Spirits in Portsmouth.Mr. Soares was a Lifetime Member of the Portsmouth Lions Club serving as the Rhode Island Lions Club District Governor from 1972 to 1973. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Housing Authority for many years. Mr. Soares also enjoyed being a member of the ?Chain Crew? for Portsmouth High School Football. He served on the Portsmouth Zoning Board of Review for 15 years, retiring in 2004 as Chairman.Bob was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan. He said his lifelong dream was fulfilled when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling to Aruba, Alaska and most recently Ireland with his family.Besides his wife he is survived by his son Michael Soares of West Haven, CT, his daughter Theresa A. Butler of Westerly, RI, three stepchildren, Frank Caliri of Lexington, MA, Nina Smith of Portsmouth, RI, and Ann Marie Poon of Lexington, SC, his beloved grandchildren Samantha Butler of Westerly, RI, Michael Soares, Eric Soares and Lucinda Soares all of West Haven, CT, Alexander Caliri and Andrew Caliri both of Lexington, MA, Aaron Smith of Portsmouth, RI, and Jennifer Poon and Christopher Poon both of Lexington, SC, and his beloved Scottish Terrier ?Millie?He was the husband of the late Patricia Butler Soares who passed away in April of 1994 and the father of the late Alexis F. LeFerte who passed away in December of 2004.His funeral will be held on Friday, January 13, 2006, at 11:00AM, in St. Mary?s Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be in St. Mary?s Churchyard in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2006, from 6-9PM in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Donations in Bob?s memory may be made to the Portsmouth High School Athletic Fund, Education Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871
