Captain Robert G. Loewenthal US Navy Retired Captain Robert G. Loewenthal, USN, Ret., 72, of Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Jamestown, RI, passed away on Tuesday, July 4th, 2006 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Jo Ann Mundorff Loewenthal. They were married for 49 years.Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he was the son of the late Charles and Ella Shadbolt Loewenthal. A 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served one year in the surface Navy before reporting to Submarine School. After graduation, he served in two diesel submarines. He attended Defense Intelligence School in Washington DC and served as an analyst at the Naval Scientific and Technical Intelligence Center for two years. His area of interest was Submarine and Submarine launched missiles.He then received Nuclear Power training and reported to the commissioning crew of USS Queenfish SSN 651. After the ship?s commissioning, he was the Navigator and Operations Officer for two years which included an under-ice operation.Capt. Loewenthal then served as Executive Officer of USS Daniel Boone SSBN 629 Blue. He served as Comanding Officer of USS George Bancroft SSBN 643 Gold for three years. These were both Poseidon Ballistic Missile Submarines. After serving in positions on submarine squadron and group staffs, he commanded the USS Hunley AS 31, a submarine tender, taking the ship from Guam back to the United States for overhaul and then to Holy Loch, Scotland to refit submarines. Captain Loewenthal then commanded the Submarine Base at Kings Bay, Georgia for two years. He rounded out his Navy career of over 30 years as a professor at the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island for three years, where he held the Vice Admiral Charles Lockwood Chair of Submarine Warfare.After retirement from the Navy, Captain Loewenthal was the Program Manager for Research and Development at EGG Corporation, Mechanical Components Group for 10 years, and continued with consulting work within the field until recently.He was a member of St. Marys Church and St. Marys Church Choir, U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, U.S. Naval Submarine League, U.S. Naval Institute, U.S. Naval War College Foundation, Naval Order of the United States, The Victorian Military Society, Newport Artillery Company, active from 1987 to 1993, then in Battery B inactive Battery, Coasters Harbor Navy Yacht Club, Newport Navy Choristers 1999-2002, Narragansett Brass Quintet 1986-2002, ROMPS, Swing Band, Wakefield, Jamestown Community Band and Salve University Band and Orchestra.Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister Peggy Johns of Iowa, four children, Daniel Loewenthal, David Loewenthal, Janet Apter, Steven Loewenthal; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.Services will be held Friday, July 7, at 10 am, at St Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
