Portsmouth, RI - Robert G. Maurer, 89, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. He was the husband of Mildred E. "Mim" Maurer. Born in Irvington, NJ on July 29, 1924, he was the son of the late Herman and Anna Mae (Sieben) Maurer. Robert was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in WWII and the Korean War, achieving the rank of 1st Lt. Robert graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange New Jersey; he was also a graduate of General Motors Institute, now Kettering University in Flint, MI. He worked as an engineer for Hyatt Roller Bearings, a division of General Motors in Harrison, New Jersey. After leaving General Motors Robert was employed by Shell Oil Company, and worked for them for over 30 years, in Industrial Sales. He was an active, longstanding worshipper at Evangelical Friends Church of Newport, where he served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in many leadership capacities. His retirement gift to the church was creating a garden at the back of the church, the size of a football field, which faces Green End Pond. He affectionately called it "The Scene at the Pond". Besides his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his sons John K. Maurer and wife Sarah of Westfield, MA, David E. Maurer of Portsmouth, RI, and daughter Lynn Schumacher and husband Fred of Frederick, MD, his brother Arthur Maurer and wife Phyllis of Laguna Niguel, CA, and granddaughters Kathryn Schumacher and her husband Johannes and Kristine Schumacher. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday March 24, 2014 from 10am- 11am, in Evangelical Friends Church, 70 Bliss Mine Road, Middletown, followed by his service at 11am in the church. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery in Portsmouth.
