Robert J. Ferris, of Middletown, RI, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Emily Alice (Andrade) Ferris.Born in Newport, RI, on September 8, 1933 , he was the son of the late Manuel J. and Lettie Mae (Borden) Ferris.Mr Ferris married his wife in a double wedding ceremony with Emily's brother George and Pat Andrade in 1955. Bob's first job was working as a delivery driver for JT O'Connell. After that he moved on to bus driver for the Short Line Bus Company which later became the Bonanza Bus Lines. After working for Bonanza for several years, he started working for RIPTA and eventually became a supervisor of the Aquidneck Island routes until his retirement. He was a member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus, and was their treasurer for many years. He was a communicant of Jesus Savior Church in Newport and a past Trustee of the Church. Bob was dedicated to the church and served several Pastors, acting as the "right hand man" for many years, taking care of the church in so many ways. He was also a three time Mordormo for the Holy Ghost Feast and a member of the Holy Name Society and Seven Castles Club.He was an avid Nascar Racing fan, and loved watching the Boston Red Sox, whether they won or lost, he would still cheer them on. Bob loved spending time with his friends at the former Tommy's Diner and then at Chelsea's Restaurant in Middletown.He is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Emily Alice, his daughter Cheryl Quinn and her husband Gary of St. Cloud, FL, his son Russell William Ferris and his wife Karen of Portsmouth, and his daughter Lisa Reynolds and her husband William of Portsmouth, and his daughter in law JoAnn Ferris of Portsmouth. He is also survived by his aunts Elvira Ferris, Laura Amaral and Elizabeth Furtado, and his five grand children, Meagan, Robert, Kevin, Hunter and Kendall Ferris, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son Robert J. Ferris Jr. and his brother Raymond S. Ferris. Calling hours will be held Thursday, May 31 from 4:00-8:00PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012, at 9:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Jesus Savior Church, 1 Vernon Avenue, Newport.
