Newport, - Robert Paul Maloney, 82, of 31 Sheffield Avenue Newport, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of Hazel May Green Maloney of Newport. Born in Newport, RI on October 26, 1920, he was the son of the late Jeremiah P. and Ellen Curran Maloney.Mr. Maloney graduated from De La Salle in 1938. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, he served on destroyers, in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters, receiving the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. Mr. Maloney received his embalmers license in 1947 from the New England School of Anatomy. He then went on to work for the Memorial Funeral Home, then at Dumphy-Leary Funeral Home until the 1970s. He also worked at the United States Postal service in 1949 retiring in 1975. Mr. Maloney was a member of St. Josephs Church, the K of C Newport Council 256, the DAV of America, and the Idle Hour Club. He was an avid golfer at Wanumetonomy Golf Club and enjoyed bird watching. Besides his wife of 56 years he is survived by his son Robert P. Maloney of Portsmouth, RI, two daughters Jane L. Maloney of Newport, RI, and Elizabeth A. Covel of Pittsburg, PA, two brothers Francis X. Maloney of Middletown, RI, and Daniel P. Maloney of Providence, RI, his sister Katherine Maloney of Middletown, RI, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.He was the sister of the late Jeremiah P. Maloney, Arthur Maloney, Edward Maloney, John Maloney, Helen Mahoney and Mary Martland.His funeral will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2003, at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
