Dr. Robert Joseph Quigley, DC, 76, of 80 Young Drive, Portsmouth, RI, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at home. He was the husband of Sharon Tierney Quigley of Portsmouth. Born in Newport, RI on April 14, 1934, he was the son of the late John and Marguerite Reynolds Quigley.Robert was a 1954 graduate of Rogers High School and earned his Bachelors Degree from RI College in 1958. He continued his studies at the Chiropractic Institute of New York, receiving his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1964. Dr. Quigley opened his practice in Rhode Island in 1965, and has been located on Main Road in Tiverton for the last 35 years. He was awarded RI Chiropractor of the Year in 1994 and Newport Daily News Citizen of the Year in 2001. Dr. Quigley was Chairman of the State of Rhode Island Department of Health--Health Services Council, past president of the Massachusetts Chiropractic Society, and involved in dictating the professional standard of Chiropractors, on both the state and national Boards of Chiropractors and licensing boards. Robert was an active volunteer with several civic organizations, including the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission, the Transportation Advisory Committee of the RI DOT, and the Portsmouth Planning Board.He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sharon Tierney Quigley of Portsmouth, two sons John A. Quigley of Ithaca, NY, and David B. Quigley of Boulder, CO, his three daughters Michelle Lash of Waterville Valley, NH, Melissa Quigley of Providence, RI, and Katherine Quigley of San Clemente, CA. Robert is also survived by his brothers William Quigley of Newport, and John Quigley of Newport, RI, and his sister Ann Quigley of Newport. He also leaves his grandsons Max, Alexander, and Benjamin Lash of Waterville Valley, NH, granddaughter Anna Quigley and grandson Parker Quigley of Ithaca, NY, and granddaughters Clare and Addison Quigley of Boulder, CO. He was preceded in death by his son Robert J. Quigley, and his sisters Rita Russo and Marie Phelan. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 7 at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
