Portsmouth, RI - Roger E. Mathieu, 74, of Lawrence Drive Portsmouth died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Helen Furtado Mathieu. The couple was married for 45 years. He was born in Fall River, MA, the son of Peter J. Mathieu and Florence Massey Mathieu. He was the loving father of Mark Mathieu of Newport; Dr. Michele Mathieu of South Kingstown; Rachel Barber of South Kingstown; and Julie Edinburgh of London, England and Newport. He was beloved grandfather of Hazel Shea Mathieu, Emily Mae and Jack Mathieu Edinburgh and Jamie Lynne and Ryan Clifford Barber. He was also the loving son-in-law of Josephine Furtado of Portsmouth. Roger graduated from DeLaSalle Academy in Newport, RI, attended Providence College and Bryant College and also served in the US Army. Roger was a retired Portsmouth postal carrier. Along with his parents, he also owned and operated Pete and Flos Variety Store in Island Park. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Green Valley Country Club. In 1994, Roger was the RIGA Senior Amateur Golf Champion. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at 9:00 am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009, from 4:00-7:00pm in the Connors Funeral Home.
