Portsmouth, RI - Roger R. Roberts, Jr., 64, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Portsmouth, RI. Born in St. Petersburg, FL on May 21, 1950, he was the son of Roger R. and Cynthia (Andrews) Roberts. A graduate of Rogers High School, Roger served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He went on to study law enforcement at Salve Regina University and joined the Newport Police Department. During his tenure there he was a member of the patrol division, street crime unit, DSI, Swat Team and a sworn U.S. Federal Marshall while assigned to a U.S. Government program to combat large scale drug smuggling in New England. Roger was a graduate of the FBI fingerprint school and completed U.S. Army Marksmanship Training, Unit #1, at Fort Mead, Maryland - one of the proudest moments of his career life. Over the years Roger received many commendations for his service and police work. After leaving the police department Roger owned and managed several restaurants in Newport. Prior to his retirement Roger went into the electrical field and retired in 2013. He is survived by his wife Rebecca, daughter, Hope Roberts-Ready and grandchildren Andrew and Alex. Roger leaves one sister, Debbie Miller and partner Steve, and two brothers, Sean Roberts and wife Kim, and William Roberts and wife Dianna, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Susan Roberts.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, from 5-8 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.A Memorial service celebrating Roger's life will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at 10:00am in Cross Pointe Church, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport.Family and friends are welcome to attend a brief time of food and fellowship at the church after the service.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
