Rolando G. Reyes

Portsmouth, RI - Rolando G. Reyes, 72, of Donna Drive, Portsmouth, RI, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at home with his family at his side.Born in Cavite, the Philippines, on October 22, 1938, he was the son of the late Benedicto and Esther Gelera Reyes.Mr. Reyes served in the United States Navy for 22 years. He worked as a cook for the NETC Galleys, Ney Hall and Patrick Hall. Mr. Reyes was a member of the Fleet Reserve, the Knights of Columbus in Middletown, and the Filipino American Association. Rolando received an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson and Wales University. He was an avid Mahjong player and loved bowling, fishing and cooking. He is survived by his children, Rhonda Metzler and her fianc, Jeffrey Diggs, of Newport, RI, Robin Newberry and her husband, William, of Florida, Ronnie Reyes and his wife, Jill, of West Warwick, RI, and Reynaldo Reyes and his fianc, Tami Holland, of Westerly, RI; fourteen grandchildren; one great grandson; and his cherished longtime friend and companion, Kimberly Moriarty Burke, of Portsmouth, RI.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2010 from 5-8 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Monday, December, 13, 2010 at 10:30 am in the funeral home.Burial with Military Honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
