Roman William Maire, 85, formerly of 4 Orville Drive, Middletown, RI, died Friday, October 31, 2003 at Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center Newport, RI.He was the husband of the late Edith George Maire. Born in Emmendingen, Germany on December 31, 1917, he was the son of the late Charles L. and Matilda Frick Maire.Mr. Maire was a paratrooper in the 82 division, serving with General Patton in the battle of the Bulge and also the 101st Airborne. A recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received at Anzio Beachhead Italy in February 1943, Major Maire also was awarded the Bronze Star; Distinguished Unit Badge; Army Occupation Medal; American Defense Service Medal; WWII Victory Medal; EAME Service Medal; American Theatre Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and the Good Conduct Medal.After serving 20 years in the army, retiring as a Major he then worked at the United States Army Natick Massachusetts Labs designing parachutes until he retired in 1972.Mr. Maire moved to Newport in 1988 from Lawrence, MA. He was a member of the South Congregational Church in Lawrence, MA, the Lawrence Rod Gun Club, the Masonic Lodge in Lawrence, and the Shriners of North Carolina. He is survived by his daughter Judith Menard of Middletown, RI, three grandsons Christopher Menard of New Bedford, MA, Michael Menard and Nathan Menard both of Middletown, RI, his great granddaughter Amanda Menard of Bristol, RI, and his great grandson Logan Menard of New Bedford, MA.He was the brother of the late John Maire. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, November 8, at 10:00am at Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth.
