Middletown, RI - Ronald Paul Sams, 79, of Middletown, died Friday, October 17, 2014 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Ethel G. (McIntosh) Sams. Born in Mansfield, Ohio on June 28, 1935, he was the son of the late Lee Willard and Mary E. (Kibler) Sams. Mr. Sams served in the United States Navy for 20 years, participating in the Vietnam War and doing 3 around the world cruises serving on multiple ships including the USS Oklahoma City CLG-5 while stationed in Yokosuka, Japan from April 1971 to May 1974. Ron was also stationed at the Naval Atomic Supply Agency in Clarkesville Base, TN from May 1968 to October of 1969. In addition he served at the Navy Finance Office here in Newport from November 1969 to March 1971 as well as the Naval Investigative Service Headquarters in Alexandria, VA from July 1974 to July 1975. Ron also worked as a Disbursing Clerk at the Portsmouth Naval Prison in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was a bookkeeper for the former Dannin Mendell Associates in Middletown before retiring after 30 years. He was an active member of CrossPoint Church and loved serving in any capacity as well as opening his home to anyone in need. Ron loved fishing, walking, traveling and family trips. He loved nothing more than his family especially all of his grandchildren. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his children Laura A. Jensen of Middletown, RI, Patrick M. Sams and his wife Doreen of Middleberg, FL, Kristin G. Baker and her husband Herbert of Middletown, RI, and Matthew R. Sams and his wife Nicole of Middletown, RI, his siblings, Della Irene Vanhesteren of Lexington, OH, Allan Sams of Ormond Beach, FL, Sandra Sargent of Mansfield, OH, and twelve grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and also many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lee W. Sams Jr. and Betty Gerhart Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at 10:00am, in CrossPoint Church, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport. Burial with Military honors will be in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron's name may be made to the RI Veterans Home, Ward N3, 480 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI 02809.
