Rose M. McCray, 81, of Paramount Apartments, 76 Broadway, Newport, RI, died on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Newport Hospital.She was the longtime companion of Edward Massey of Newport and the former wife of Harold McCray of Portsmouth.Born in Newport, RI on November 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Fortunato and Mary Rosa Ribeiro.Mrs. McCray was a daycare teacher at the Martin Luther King Center in Newport for many years before retiring. She previously worked as a teachers aide at the former Mumford Elementary School in Newport. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed reading, crocheting, and following the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. She was also a member of the Paramount Apartment Tenants Association.In addition to her companion and former husband, she is survived by her children, Cheryl Ann McCray of Newport, RI, Joel McCray and his wife, Jacqueline Monteiro, also of Newport, RI and Melanie Burden and her husband, Sige, of Athens, GA; eight grandchildren, Jason Andrews and his wife, Tonya, Brandon and Trenton Andrews, Zachary and Dante McCray, Zildjian and Laura Baptista, and Shaquille Alleyne; one great-grandson, Patrick Sean Baptista; ; her sisters and brother, Catherine Butler, Dorothy Ribeiro, Helen Ribeiro and Mary Young and her husband, Warren, all of Newport, RI, Alice Johnson of Springfield Gardens, NY, Marion Nunley of Oklahoma City, OK, and Theodore Ribeiro of Providence, RI; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Sylvestre and Elizabeth Ribeiro, and Rita Keating.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 8 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.
