Newport, - Ruth Margaret Herring Ellis, 91, of 235 Gibbs Avenue, Newport, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at St. Clare Home Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Edward Norman Ellis. Born in Newport, RI on Oct. 22, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Frank Herring and Margaret Qualters Herring. Mrs. Ellis worked at the former Newport Torpedo Station during World War II and later was a bookkeeper at the former James A. Eddy Store of Newport. She then went on to work in the US Naval Finance Department, on the Newport Naval Base retiring in 1984. Mrs. Ellis was a communicant of St. Lucys Church and was also an avid bridge player and gardener. She is survived two sons, Edward Michael Ellis and Stephen F. Ellis both of North Kingston; a daughter, Mary Anne Griffin of Newport; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.She was the mother of the late Raymond Ellis and sister of the late Mary Humbert and Daisey Gordon.Her funeral will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth.
