Middletown, RI - Samuel Luther Chaplin, 70, of 707 Forest Park, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Edith N. Maxwell Sokol Chaplin. Born in Newport, RI on April 24, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur Wilfred and Florence Luther Chaplin.Mr. Chaplin grew up in Middletown and graduated from Rogers High School. He was a Middletown Policeman for 20 years as a detective and K9 officer. He was a member of the FOP and the Retired Policemans Association. Mr. Chaplin worked at Firestone Estate and other Private Properties after retiring, and enjoyed doing photography, woodworking and fixing and making things in his free time. He is survived by his stepdaughter Anna Kusinitz of Easton, MD, RI, his stepson Edward Sokol of Middletown, RI, his brothers Rev. George M. Chaplin of Newport, RI and Arthur Chip Chaplin and his wife Dolores Dolly S. Chaplin of Portsmouth, RI, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and his niece Karol Chaplin of Portsmouth, RI.He was the step father of the late John Sokol and the brother of the late Robert B. Chaplin, C. Kenneth Chaplin, Arnold Dunbar Chaplin and Eleanor J. Chaplin Bryant. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2008, at 3:00 pm in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown.
