Samuel Middleton Cottrell Barker, 81, died at his home on July 27, 2002 in Newport, Rhode Island.He was born in Newport on January 1, 1921 to Ralph R. and Harriet Cottrell Barker and was the grandson of Robert C. Cottrell, Former Mayor of Newport in 1905. He was a 10th generation descendant of Nicholas Easton, a founder of Newport in 1639, and also a 9th generation descendent of James Barker, one of the 24 petitioners of the 1663 Rhode Island charter drafted by John Clarke and granted by Charles II of England.He was educated in Newport schools, graduating from Rogers High in 1938 and Rhode Island State College URI in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps from 1942 to 1947 and was discharged as a Captain in 1947.In 1943, he married Maryalice Ernwine in Laramie, Wyoming. He was employed by Johnson and Johnson in New Brunswick, New Jersey from 1947 to 1983 and lived in Somerville and Bridgewater, N.J. He served as a volunteer and a Director of the Easter Seal Society of N.J. for 15 years, part of that time as the New Jersey State president.He retired from Johnson and Johnson in 1983 and returned to his hometown, Newport, R.I. He and his wife remodeled an 1881 Victorian House at 11 Francis Street, which had been owned by his grandfather Robert C. Cottrell and his aunt Catherine Cottrell since 1910. He served as President of the Newport Historical Society from 1989 to 1994 and remained active as president emeritus. He served as a board member of Brick Market Foundation, Citizens Concerned about Casino Gambling and Christmas in Newport. He was a former vestryman of Trinity Church and a member of Middletown and Rhode Island Historical Societies, Preservation Society of Newport County, Quindecim Dinner Club, Newport Art Museum, Seamens? Church Institute Advisory Board and City of Newport 350th Anniversary Committee.He is survived by his wife, Maryalice, his sister, Virginia B. Tate of Newport, RI, his three daughters, Susan B. Westbrook of Randolph, Vermont, Mary Frances Barker of Anchorage, Alaska, and Laurie B. Redel of Grand Isle, Vermont. He also leaves sons-in-law John Westbrook and John Redel and five grandchildren, Rachel, Seth and Clay Westbrook and Sam and Emma Redel. A memorial service will be held at 10:30am, Tuesday, August 6th at Trinity Church in Newport, R.I.
