Sarah Ann Howe

Portsmouth, RI - Sarah Ann Drury Howe long-time resident of Aquidneck Island, died Tuesday in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She was 92.Born in Providence, RI in 1917, she grew up in Middletown, RI. She attended the Wheeler School in Providence, RI and taught nursery school at Milton Academy in Massachusetts and the Park School in Baltimore, MD. In 1944 she married Calderon Howe of Washington, DC. She lived first in Riverdale, New York, where her husband was a professor of microbiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, then in New Orleans, Louisiana, where Dr. Howe was Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at Louisiana State University. In the early 1980s the couple retired to Newport, RI. Sallys life was filled with books, music, art, nature, travel and family. She passed on a deep appreciation of all those things to her children and grandchildren, She is survived by Calderon Carlisle Howe and his wife Penny Howe of Hayden, CO, John Robins Howe and his wife Anne-Marie Victor-Howe of Cambridge, MA, Sarah Bruce Howe of Providence, RI, and Ann Mandeville Howe of Portsmouth, RI; five grandchildren,, Russel Howe of San Diego, CA, Emily Howe of Santa Catalina, CA, Annie Howe Morgan and her husband Arthur Morgan of Baltimore, MD, and Mary and Bowen Teuscher of Portsmouth, RI and Walden, VT. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Robert H.I. Goddard of Providence, RI, a sister-in-law Mary Coit Drury of Vinalhaven, ME, a brother-in-law, Bruce Howe of Newport, RI and many nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at 5:00 pm in St. Columba Berkeley Memorial Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown. Burial will be private.
