Middletown, - Sarah Ann Greene Smith, 96, of 333 Green End Avenue Middletown, formerly of 44 High Street, Jamestown, RI, died Monday, November 4, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 29, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Edward Wanton and Dorothea Atwater Smith.Ms. Smith graduated from the Germantown Friends School in 1923 and from Wellesley College in 1927. She worked with the American Friends Service Committee in Geneva Switzerland and taught fo two years at the Friends Service School in Tokyo, Japan. During this period she formed friendships that would last a lifetime. Returning to the United States she went to work at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where she remained for twenty-five years. She maintained a summer home in Jamestown, Rhode Island for many years and took up permanant residence there in 1972. Miss Smith was active in community affairs in Jamestown and was a prominent member of the towns Quaker community. She is survived by her brother William W. Smith of Jamestown, RI, several nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and grand nephews.She was the sister of the late Esther Fisher Benson of Newport, RI the late Deborah Paul of Jamestown, RI and the late Edward Smith of Jamestown, RI.A memorial service will be held in the springtime at the Jamestown Quaker Meetinghouse at a time to be announced.Burial will be private.
