Shirley Anne Infiorati

Tiverton, RI - Shirley Anne (Whalen) Infiorati, of Tiverton, RI, died peacefully at home on June 27, 2012. Born in Rockville Centre, NY to Edward and Ruth (MacDougal) Whalen, Shirley was raised in the State of Maine and remained a loyal Mainer her whole life. She graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in nursing and shortly thereafter married a classmate, Matthew Infiorati. In 1960 they married and moved to Portsmouth, RI.While raising four children, Shirley was a geriatric Nursing Supervisor in various nursing homes in the area. She had great empathy for her patients as well as her children and knew when to make them laugh and when to let them cry, when to make them sit up straight and when to simply hold their hand. Shirleys many interest included literature, travel, nature and needlework. She was a member of a Great Books reading group for 25 years. Her travels included most of Europe, plus Nepal and Korea. She knitted beautiful sweaters for friends and family and hats and mittens for the homeless, and her sewing and needlework were superb. But driving, she said, was her passion. Road trips to Maine and Florida with her beloved cat, Dirty Harry, were frequent. She drove across America several times and visited every state in the union except Alaska. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Matt. She leaves four children: Jill Leaverton (and Jim, San Diego), Jay Infiorati (and Holly, San Diego), Meg Fleming (Denver and Steinhatachee, FL), and Jennifer Eaken (and Jack Boyd, Portsmouth). She also leaves her grandchildren, Eric and Marissa Eaken, step-granddaughter, Lea Bennett and great-grandchildren, Travis and Chole.Shirley made and kept all her friends for life. Many, many people will miss her deeply.Visitation with her family will be on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 4-8 pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI with a Celebration of Life Service by the family at 6 pm.Burial will be private.
